About The Date Hut

Our story, our values, and our commitment to quality

Rooted in Intention

The Date Hut isn't a big corporation. It's a husband and wife, two little boys running around in the background, full-time jobs, community commitments — and a genuine desire to do something that actually matters.

I'm an Imam and a headteacher. My wife is a teacher. Between us, our days are full before they've even started. So when people ask why we do this on top of everything else, the answer is simple: because nobody else was doing it the way it should be done.

It started in 2020, when travel restrictions cut us off from the quality dates our family had always known. We placed a small order directly from Madinah — just for ourselves, family, and close friends. The response was overwhelming. Word spread, and what began as a family purchase became something more purposeful.

Our Story

For us, food carries meaning — and that belief shapes every decision we make.

Our Ajwa Aliya dates come directly from the Awaali region of Madinah, sourced through personal relationships with farmers we trust. Our Palestinian produce comes exclusively through YAFFA and Holy Lands — people we know, whose ethics we've witnessed first-hand.

We've visited these farms ourselves. We've sat with these farmers, broken bread with them, looked them in the eye. When you know a Palestinian farmer is still tending his land under occupation, still producing something world-class, you don't just want to sell his oil. You want every customer to understand the weight of what they're holding.

The Prophet ﷺ described dates, honey, and barley among the most blessed of foods — and there is something intentional about building a business around provisions that have nourished people for centuries. We don't say that to preach. We say it because it's genuinely part of why we care so deeply about getting this right.

That's why we pay more than we have to. That's why we push for fair wages at every point in the supply chain. And that's why we've donated nearly £10,000 to Gaza and local causes in 2024 alone — because this has never been about profit. It's about doing business the way we believe it should be done.

Ethics and Sourcing

Modern slavery is not a distant problem. It exists in agricultural supply chains across the world — including in the date industry. We refuse to be part of that.

Every farmer and supplier we work with is vetted personally — not by a third-party audit box-tick, but by us, in person, through relationships built over time. We pay fairly. We compensate promptly. And if a supplier can't meet that standard, we don't work with them.

Direct relationships - We go straight to the source. No exploitative intermediaries, no mystery supply chains. If we don't know who grew it, we don't sell it.

Fair compensation - Every farmer we work with is paid properly. That's non-negotiable, and it costs us more. We do it anyway.

Transparency - You deserve to know where your food comes from. We'll always tell you — because we have nothing to hide.

Thinking Globally, Sourcing Locally

Our commitment to ethical sourcing doesn't stop at international borders.

Our honey is sourced from British beekeepers — raw, natural, and as close to the hive as it gets. Our organic stone ground barley — the basis of talbina, a food the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have praised for its healing properties — is sourced from organic British farms, milled in the traditional way.

When we can source it well and source it locally, we will.

Sustainability

We use eco-friendly Kraft packaging across our range. We work only with farmers who practise responsible, sustainable agriculture. We look for ways to reduce waste at every stage — from farm to your door. Not because it's fashionable, but because it's right.

Organic Certification

All of our products are certified organic by recognised international bodies — the Organic Food Federation in the UK, KIWA in Saudi Arabia, and USDA-certified suppliers. Our dates are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers.

Organic certification costs more. We do it anyway — for soil health, for the farmers who tend the land, and for the families eating what we produce.

Our Packaging

We use resealable, eco-friendly Kraft packaging throughout our range — keeping your dates fresh, minimising environmental impact, and reflecting the quality of what's inside. Clear labelling, full origin information, no unnecessary waste.

For Retail, Wholesale & Gifting

Whether you're stocking up for your family, looking for a meaningful Ramadan gift, or placing a bulk order for a masjid, school, or corporate event — we're here for all of it.

We deliver across the UK and offer free collection from Gloucester. If you have a specific requirement, just get in touch. We're a real family, not a call centre.

When You Support Us, You Support the Mission

We run The Date Hut as a side hustle — from our garage, around two full-time careers and two young children. Every order we receive helps fund our visits to the farms we source from, so we can maintain those relationships, uphold those standards, and spread a little of the blessing back to the people who grew what you're eating.

We live in a world where the rights of the vulnerable are increasingly forgotten and everything is reduced to margin and profit. We want no part of that. When you buy from The Date Hut, you're choosing something different — ethical practices, fairly paid farmers, and a family that genuinely means what it says.

That matters to us more than we can put into words. And we hope it matters to you too.

Stay connected. We're in this for the long haul.
